September 30th is Orange Shirt Day!
We talk about how the Indigenous children were sent to Residential (sleep away) School. The children missed their family. Phillis' favorite orange shirt was taken away. We wear an orange shirt to remember the children who were taken to Residential School. The version of the book I use has been made specifically for 3-4 year old's. The children do notice the character does not return home until the next summer. They often ask if Santa can find them at Christmas since they stay at the school. I refer to this story often throughout the year. The children will use it during the land acknowledgement. |
