We are beginning an inquiry that may take all year long. The question "Are all forests the same?"- ER made us think what do we know about our forest? Shortly after M said "It looks like a jungle in here" (camp). And our friend J is always talking about coconuts and palm trees.
We will explore locally and then globally through experiences, activities, books and videos. We are going to create an in class book with all our findings. We will also post photos of our learning here. Remember to check back here bi-weekly.

Week of Sept.20-24
This week the children found an apple tree. They drew it with pencils then coloured it in. They also drew and painted the trees behind the childcare. The children collected leaves. We looked to see the shape, colour and if the edges were smooth or serrated. We then searched for the tree were the leaves came from.

Oct 18-21
This week we made a list of all the tree names we know. We then went into the forest to find them. While we were there we found a tree that had fallen. We could see and touch the roots. We compared it the the tree book we have been using for research. Did you know trees talk to each other through their roots. They can share food that way too.

Week of Oct 25-29
This week we found an osage orange broken in half. How did it happen? Where is the other half? Is that a seed in the middle? Is it slimey?
We found trees with mushrooms and holes in them. The first mushroom was told to us by J's Mom. We went to see it and found some trees with spikes growing out of them. We wonder why?
There are a lot of different mushrooms growing in our forest, so many to discover. And who is putting all those holes in the trees?

We have been busy. We have visited the senior camp a few times. It seems to rain every thursday for the past few weeks. We have noticed the osage oranges are everywhere. They have also started to change colour. We thought it might turn orange because of the name. They are getting brown spots. We have been noticing the holes in trees and mushrooms everywhere.
February 16
We visited the trees by the Theal house. We have been watching them through the seasons and weather. We noticed them swaying on windy days. We treaked through deep snow just to see them up close. We found bugs dead on the snow beside one. Trees are amazing.

March 7th
We went to the Theal house today. ES asked if we could play the game where Susanne calls out the name of a tree and the children run to the tree. Before we started the children were asked if they remembered the names of the trees. They knew all but one. Susanne also forgets that one.
After we played the game we split up and were nature detectives. The mission is to find signs of spring. We found buds forming on all of the trees.
