As part of our math curriculm we learn about shapes and volume. On this day we had 6 open containers one of them was full of water. The children were asked which one was the biggest and which was the smallest. We lined them up acording to size. Susanne poured the water from the largest to the next size. Surprise they were the same size! They both held the same volume 1000ml. By the end of the experiment the children found out all the containers were the same size. After we looked at other 3D shapes and learned their names.

We had a very busy week with lots of discoveries. We began the week with nice weather and some fort building. The ladybugs were out flying around the playground. There were too many to count.
Later we went to a different location for forest school. On our way we found milkweed pods bursting with seeds. Then we found an apple tree that had a neighbouring tree full of berries and wild grape vines. We alwas discuss how the fruit we see is not for us, it is for the animals that live in the forest. Then we list all that we can think of. At the new camp we had visitors or company, the toddlers. The Kinders were very kind and helpful with the little friends. They played house, painted pictures and listened to the rain hitting the leaves. After the toddlers left we continued to explore the new area. We visited a bridge that crosses the swamp area opposit to the island we usually visit. They were able to feel a cattail. It was a week of discoveries for sure. We started today with a vote and ended up at the lake. There was a few ducks that left the island when we arrived. C noticed the geese and swans on the other side. He was worried they would come and bite us. I remi ded the children we are the big scary monsters The children wanted to toss rocks into the lake. There was discussion about how many rocks and the size of rock to throw. "We don't want the island to disapear. After our talk about the forest yesterday, conservation has been o their minds. C and E found sticks to gather grass from the lake. They made a sea weed salad for the geese. We added a cut up wild pear we found on the trail. We decided to go to the old camp again. Everyone had a turn to climb the tree (if they wanted). Some friends made a campfire and cooked yummy food. E made strawberry muffins. L and I "ate" them all. C made the fire pit and dug some holes.
D, F, S and OG had a fairy festival. The fairies hopped and flew around the pine tree. O played with the fairies and cooked some yummy food. It was a great day. Today was cross country race day at Brock. The race goes through our camp so we made a little detour. First we went to the lake. Here we can toss rocks into the water, look for wildlife and enjoy the view. After we went to the old camp where C's brother did forest school. The camp has changed since then. Students found it and took over. They cut down trees and burned up our forts and circle time area. We had a discussion about forest safety. After the children played and climbed a tree. There is a hole in the tree, they noticed water inside. We will have to see if it is really water or something else. Then we did it all again the next day. |
