Today we went to the lake look out (aka the cage/gate) and noticed how dry the lake looked. The water level was dropped recently drying out the side closest the the storm drain. There is some concern about the fish we saw two weeks before. Also last week when Z's stick disturbed the algae on the bottom a gasoline type fluid floated to the surface. We could see the rainbow trail it made and how it spread around the lake. Pollution is upsetting. The boys are noticing all the changes in the forest and we are wondering how many of them are caused by all the construction happening on campus. We continued to the island and found it to be huge. There were two frozen puddles just waiting to be explored. The side closest to the storm drain was a dried up mud patch with a tire stuck in it and some cool footprints (raccoon and duck). The pond on the island was frozen and a fun place to toss rocks. They didn't go in but instead bounced or slid across making a unique sound. The puddles ended up being cracked open. The ice pieces were then used for tossing into the lake. The lake had waves. The edges had ice capped rocks. So many things for the senses. When we returned Kelly said we smelled like fish. T had a muddy face. Everyone was smiling.

We have been so busy the last two weeks. There was a hawk sitting on the playground fence. It hopped onto the treehouse and hung around for a while. It didn't mind us playing on the hill nearby.
When there is nothing to do we find things to do. The boys were excited to play on a snowbank even though it was not soft. They noticed a space where the storm drain was and decided to fill it with ice balls. It took morning and afternoon until it was complete. The lake has had it's water level drop. There is a dam on both ends so the Hydro company can control it. Rock island is now huge. We can go to new parts and walk along the shore. We do need to avoid the mud puddles when asked so we won't fall or loose a boot or both. The field is not as interesting as it once was. Everyday the same space. So we set up ropes to climb and a tent. The boys were pretending they were in jurassic park being chased by T-rex's and diving under the cage door. We went to the pond and the boys were surprised it was frozen. There were a few bits still fluid. So many questions: where are the fish? Did they die? Are they hiding? Can I walk on the ice? What would happen? That took about two minutes then the game of hide and seek took over. We always find a way to learn and have fun. Written by S Robitaille. Pajama day!We had a fun pajama day. Susanne had more changing our classroom into a cozy christmas picture.
