We were looking for a log to use as a sofa for the new fort. We found one that was too long so we had to cut it. Once it was ready I asked for some helpers to lift it. That's when we noticed all the creatures living on it. Snails, slugs and potato bugs.

At camp we were very busy. The tools were out first. There was some whittlers and sawing some logs. Next came fishing. J had the idea to make a fishing pole with bait/fish tied on, then everyone followed. L finished the final touches on the geoboard. Even Aira tried the saw. Also the bridge they made last time was still standing. It must have been built well because the storm didn't damage it at all.
Written by S Robitaille. At camp the children were finally using the geoboard they made. It is a slice of wood which the children added nails. We used neon coloured elastics to create shapes. They were so excited the wood began to rock and move. Out came a very quick and frightened salamander. It tried to find cover but Susanne needed a photo and kept moving the hiding places. We let it go. Written by S Robitaille.
Today we went to the pond inlet. On the way we noticed the pub patio has a new fence. It is surounded by glass instead of wood. We also saw a bird dead beside the glass. How did it die? It probably crashed into the glass.
At the pond we saw fish, frogs and tadploes. EF also had a visitor, one of Mom's friends. This was unexpected and we discussed what to do in this situation. It was a good example for our stranger danger discussion later. There was a beautiful dedication at the base of a tree. I had to share. Written by S Robitaille. Today we found some interesting things. The girls wanted to build a new fort. The boys joined in and we found teeny tiny black snugs had hitched a ride on Susanne and M. Later while sitting on a log ER and friends saw a giant beetle. A May Beetle, similar to a June bug but doesn't eat your lawn. Then EF saw an orange mystery item. It looked like a mushroom but it's actually a mold called Wolf's Milk. The boys had fun adjusting their fort while the girls used fairy dolls and magnify glasses. J found a piece of bark and used it as a book and tablet. ES had one and used it as a tablet to type on. There was some silly tipsy turvy play on the logs too. A great day in the woods.
Written by S Robitaille. We found some interesting things at the lake today. Check out this video I made. https://youtu.be/7aoA7YhNwo8 The water level was very low. We found a few fish who were trapped on land as the water lowered. We found a crayfish crawling around the rocks. So exciting! At camp L had a great idea to make a bridge. He decided to make a suspension bridge. J and M joined in to help.
Today we went to our camp. It was a fun day. We used tools and climbed trees. Some even drew pictures.
We did find something sad, a dead vole. What happened? Why is it dead? Who killed it? Is that blood? Can we bring it back to the childcare? No. When it's just bones? It can live with the fish. Maybe. I wonder if it will still be there tomorrow? Will this become a new interest? Will we need to bury it? It does smell bad. In the last few weeks we have been discussing death. First it was S's dog passing away. Rest in peace Loucille. Next was ER's cat getting very sick then dying. Rest in peace Moses. J remembered the death of his Grandparrents dog and it's burrial spot in the backyard. Rest in peace Lolypop On mother's day weekend ES was remembering her Grandmother who passed a few years ago. Rest in peace Mrs Commerford.
We have discussed how we feel about the loss of a loved one. I have been following their lead and answering questions with minimal truthful information. So far there have been no religious question. I keep everthing generic. We have read a few childrens books that discuss death or loss. These are big topics and can have big emotions. Sometime these things get put away and don't bubble back to the surface for a couple of months or years. Incase this topic comes up at home I thought you would like to know where it came from. I you have any questions please contact me. By the way we found a dead vole today. So we begin again. Written by S Robitaille. There is a nest over our door. First there was a Momma robin sitting inside. Then a Daddy bringing food for the Mamma. Then we saw three little beaks poking out. Now the nest is empty. Where did they go? Will they be back? They grew very quickly. Written by S Robitaille.
