The day started out very wet. The rain was steady. When we got to camp Susanne set up the shelter with help from Aira. The children wanted to tell scary stories. Susanne began then everyone had a turn. Suddenly the wind picked up and we had to move quickly. We have one dead tree that could fall so Aira took the children to the soccer field and Susanne packed up camp. We had fun playing Mr.Wolf. At first only a few wanted to play but slowly we all joined in. Then the sun came out. It was a lovely morning. Written by S Robitaille.

This week we tried our hand at drawing a moose and recreating an art piece from Gustav Klimt. The children are enjoying our series on artists. They like creating their own art too. Written by S Robitaille.
Spring has arrived. We have been seaching for signs for a while. We found plants poking through the soul and the birds returned with their beautiful songs. Now the best sign of all the spring peepers have woken up. We can hear their "peep, peep, peep" from far away. In the distance it sounds like white noise. Up close the deafening sound of hundreds of frogs singing together is overwhelming, but beautiful.
We have a book in the classroom called "Zoom into nature". This book features macro photography. M & J were curious why it is called Zoom. We looked at the photos of insect eyes and lizzard scale and realized what it meant. Then we looked at things around the room and took a regular photo and a zoomed in photo. Wow, things look different. Now the children are inspired to take their own macro photographs. We brought 2 carmeras to camp. The children have been shown how to zoom in and out. It took some practise to take a clear photo. We have a tendency to move while pressing the shutter button. Susanne will add the photos over the weekend so you can see what we see. Something new is living in our classroom. The fish skeleton we found at rock island has moved in. Susanne cleaned it very well over the weekend and now it sits on the shelf. There are magnify glasses so we can get a better look. We are not touching it because it is delicate. It looks very different from when we found to now. Check out the photos below. J is helping to make a dress for the dolly. J is using a knitting loom. On wednesday he used a small loom and made a flower. He even had to sew the centre. Lots of fine motor development, fun and pride.
What colours do you see in nature? C and L used different items to change the colours around them. A red ruler or a blue water bottle can make the world seem very different. They were comparing theories on what works better.
Photo by Aira Manalo. Oh my! Something strange is happenning. On Monday afternoon there were green footprints in the bathroom. They walked up the cupboard door and into the sink. In the sink there we pieces of pipe cleaner. How did it get there? Then the children noticed some paint dotts on the floor in the classroom. Oh My!! On tuesday the art cupboard was open and paint was spilt on the floor. There were green foot prints again. What is happenning? On wednesday there were toys on the floor. It looked like something was camping and had an egg for breakfast. We read the story " How to catch a leprechaun". The children made a rainbow and a trap. What will we find on thursday the 17th, St.Patrick's day? St. Patrick's day is here. The traps were set. Will we catch a leprechaun? No. We did find some tiny bags filled with treasure. Two gold coins for everyone. The Leprechaun out smarted us. ER thinks it was listening to our plans. J thinks we need to make the cage look more like a cloud. Even tough we didn't catch the Leprechaun it still shared it's treasure so we were successful. Written by Susanne Robitaille. Our art discover continues. We are trying our hand at still life. We didn't have any fruit so we improvised with plants and rubber animals. The children practised the other day by drawing our palm tree.
Today in the forest we brought the wagon. We had our portable classroom with all our fun equipment. We are so lucky, Helene found us some new tools. There is a saw, hammer, chisel, drills, pliers and more. The children were so excited to try the new tools. I wonder what we will make next. Photos by Aira Manalo. |
