Tuesday was an eventfull day. Everything seemed fine until lunch time. While we were resting a fox wandered into the circle across form the childcare. The fox seemed to be limping. We had to be prepared for if it came near us outside. Luckily it wandered off in the distance while we came outside. Then while we were playing at the little forest (aka the island infront of Lowenburg) ww noticed black smoke rising above the sports plex. ER thought it was a factory fire. M thought it was a vehicle crash on the hyw. Mostly we were hoping no one was hurt. We listened for the emergency vehicle to come. We watched for the smoke to change colour to gray

Today we added some logs to the seniors fort. We noticed that under the bark there were potato bugs and trails from bugs. We looked at a picture of the emerald ash bourer who has been eating the trees. After we built a fort at the old junior camp. We worked together. After they decorated the fort with dishes to make it more colourful. Written by S Robitaille. ES and M were playing limbo too.
The children noticed that some of the new children at the centre have medical plans. They were asking why the child is up on the wall. I explained that some have allergies and need special medicine. They wanted to know what type of medicine. An Epi-pen is needed. I explained how it is used and showed an information video. I brought in up one of the training pens ( no needle or medicine).
Anyone who wanted to try it could. We talked about that you can not use it unless you are sick and can not breath. It is only for emergencies. At first some were nervous. Most tried it on themselves. I did offer my thigh but they wanted to feel it. Written by S Robitaille. This week we have visited the track at the new sports plex several times. The children enjoy standing on the numbers and taking off after the standard " on your mark, get set, go".
The day started out very wet. The rain was steady. When we got to camp Susanne set up the shelter with help from Aira. The children wanted to tell scary stories. Susanne began then everyone had a turn. Suddenly the wind picked up and we had to move quickly. We have one dead tree that could fall so Aira took the children to the soccer field and Susanne packed up camp. We had fun playing Mr.Wolf. At first only a few wanted to play but slowly we all joined in. Then the sun came out. It was a lovely morning. Written by S Robitaille.
This week we tried our hand at drawing a moose and recreating an art piece from Gustav Klimt. The children are enjoying our series on artists. They like creating their own art too. Written by S Robitaille.
Spring has arrived. We have been seaching for signs for a while. We found plants poking through the soul and the birds returned with their beautiful songs. Now the best sign of all the spring peepers have woken up. We can hear their "peep, peep, peep" from far away. In the distance it sounds like white noise. Up close the deafening sound of hundreds of frogs singing together is overwhelming, but beautiful.
We have a book in the classroom called "Zoom into nature". This book features macro photography. M & J were curious why it is called Zoom. We looked at the photos of insect eyes and lizzard scale and realized what it meant. Then we looked at things around the room and took a regular photo and a zoomed in photo. Wow, things look different. Now the children are inspired to take their own macro photographs. We brought 2 carmeras to camp. The children have been shown how to zoom in and out. It took some practise to take a clear photo. We have a tendency to move while pressing the shutter button. Susanne will add the photos over the weekend so you can see what we see. Something new is living in our classroom. The fish skeleton we found at rock island has moved in. Susanne cleaned it very well over the weekend and now it sits on the shelf. There are magnify glasses so we can get a better look. We are not touching it because it is delicate. It looks very different from when we found to now. Check out the photos below. J is helping to make a dress for the dolly. J is using a knitting loom. On wednesday he used a small loom and made a flower. He even had to sew the centre. Lots of fine motor development, fun and pride.
