Exciting day. T found an antler at the side of the road. He is so excited and proud. We tried looking to see if we could find another. No luck. At camp T saw a couple of deer in the distance. We tried to get closer for a better look without scaring them off. Some of our kiddos have difficulty controlling their volume. We are working on it. T has decided to take the antler home. He let everyone have a turn holding it. Hopefully a video will come soon.

I think we added too many shamrocks to our classroom. The Leprechauns came and left a mess in our room twice. Today (wed) we found 2 messes. One on the carpet. A bunch of green toys. The other on the table. A bunch of markers and pencils, some drawings and a poem. F thinks it is a riddle, H agrees. The children have taken it as a challenge to catch the Leprechaun. We are very excited. The planning began with ideas from everyone. They made a plan. We made a supply list, bucket, string, a door or cage. Then the idea they like to dance. A disco ball was added with a candle (to make it shine) and a dance floor. Blocks were added to make stairs to the shelf. The shelf was chosen so it would be safe and quiet during rest time. After rest we found our trap didn't catch anyone. Then we added some some shiney and golden beads to trick the Leprechaun. We also think if we dress like a Leprechaun we might trick him.
The children are planning all the things they will buy with the gold. T says he will give away him piggy bank money to his friends since he will have the gold. F doesn't ned the gold she has $0. 20. B will keep his gold for later. J will put it in his piggy bank. H says he will throw it in the garbage. N will buy a toy. ND will buy a toy. We will have to ask Quentin when he returns after march break. The snow is coming. We took the wagon because the road is clear, then the snow began. We went to the old camp. Even though there isn't much there the children still like to come here. N set up a picnic while the boys circled. F found a frozen puddle. It was good for sliding on for a while with T and B. Then it was better for breaking.
There was a lot of imagination play. They were being monsters or pokemon or magical creatures. Then it would stop to have a picnic. ND had a special collection of items. He would set them up in different locations and check out how it looked. H made an oven so he could cook some food for the picnic. J decided to decorate a tree. It was a busy day. The snow was the star. Snow was food, a place to draw, something to gather and fun to roll in. Snow is the best. On thursday we went to camp after stopping by the local snow hill. At camp N J and Q used the tree blocks to make towers, trains and computers. We found a stream that flows into a hole. We think it joins up with the river down below. We also stopped by the look out. We could see Toronto.
Today we saw two men leaving the forest wearing shorts t-shirts, towel and missing a shoe. Susanne asked if they had made good choices today? It turns out they did not. They went swimming in the lake and lost a shoe. They were shivering and their legs were red. The children were very curious why they would go in the water and asked some questions. The children decided the men made some very bad choices. The men also realized they were not aware of the risks in the lake. We let them know about the muskrats, snapping turtles and crayfish that could have hurt them. (They were students from Finland) We decided to check on the crayfish and see where they went swimming. The crayfish was gone but we did see a wet spot with footprints. We also went to the field to play Mr Wolf. We ended the day with a hike to the big bridge. We saw the water flowing under some ice. There is a spot to play on the way. It was a fun day.
Fun day at the lake. Thursday we went to the island. There was a small amount of snow so we could see the edges easily, safety first. While we were looking out at the lake a swan flew by. We could hear a loud swoosh sound with each flap of a wing. It is very rare to see a swan fly. Mostly they float past the island checking to see if we have left a snack for them. Next we noticed some new foot prints. The tracks come and go from a mound of sticks. We believe it is the muskrat. We also see deer, dog and adult boot prints. The island has had many visitors. We found some sticks for fishing and the odd stone for throwing. Everyone has their spot. Everyone is happy doing their own thing. Then N calls Susanne over to show her something new. A crayfish! Everyone wants a look at the crayfish. Some remember we have one on our wall as part of our natural history museum. We all gather to watch the crayfish crawl along the bottom of the lake. "If I put my stick in it will hold on and I can pull it out!" "No it will break your stick." "I want to poke it." "It's going to pinch you!" "It's following me!" Just a few of the comments made. They were reminded that we do not hurt the creatures in nature, we take care of them and keep them safe. |
