Today we saw the heron at the lake. We thought it flew away but we were still able to get a photo or two. As we got to the end of the road ND saw 5 deer cross the road infront of us. Susanne was looking the wrong way to get a photo. We saw our Bruce Trail ladies and wished them a merry Christmas.
It was a much dryer day than yesterday. The fort was a pirate ship and J was a shark coming in for a feast. The bows and pretend arrows were popular until the wood snapped. N and B wanted to draw. Everyone joined in. B's mom came to camp to pick him up. The children were so excited to have a parent join us. In the new year we could organize a family hike or parent day if there is interest.

The weather may be wet and gloomy but out spirits are sunny and bright. The road was icy and some tried to walk and others chose to find a safer way. They did their own risk assessments. Then Susanne changed the direction and got everyone off the road. The children wanted to play our new favourite game, what time is it Mr Wolf. We did for a while then we moved to the old camp. We only had to cross the road not walk down it. Susanne set up some tarps and out came the dishes. Water play was on thier mind. No matter what we did we were getting wet. The magnetic pull water has on children is to strong the deny ( only for a short time). We survived. Not too wet, mostly just mittens. They didn' t even dry in the dryer. Susanne put all the mittens on the heat vents. They were ready in the morning. Clean up day. Last week the children noticed all the garbage around and wanted to clean it up. This week we brought a bunch of bags, wore our mittens and cleaned up three bags of trash. We met up with some ladies walking the Bruce Trail and they were very proud of us for cleaning. The ladies even helped pick up a few pieces. We went to the lake and tossed a few rocks in. We continued down the trail to last years camp. The Brock students have had another fire. The children are still angry because of the distruction of the camp and the danger of the open fire. After we went to the field and played Mr.Wolf. We are still learning to follow rules and be a good sport. Today we used our guides to explore. We found a lot of different types of birds. We scared the heron and it flew away. There were robins, blue jays and cardinals. We even saw two people practise boxing. We stopped to find out what they were doing and why. Their names are Antonio and Ola. You never know what you will see in the woods. Winter is returning. It was a windy cold day. We went to camp and watched the trees to see how much they were moving. It was safe. N kept checking the sway when the wind would blow. We were good.
The children are enjoying trying the deers trails. There is a big tree and a rock just outside our usual camp. They can go there and play. It is a big trusting experience to go. They are doing great. Susanne walks back and forth between the two areas just to check in. Rainy dayThe rain was non stop and heavy. Instead of being still the children decided to go on an adventure hike. We began near the Theal house where they found osage oranges. The children carried these all morning. ND did convince T and B to hold his for a bot because his arms were tired.
our first stop was the bridge to Decew house. It is at the edge of Brock property. We could see a swan, then the second. Our next stop was at the giving tree to see the treasure. We didn't have anything to trade in the box. We made a plan the find something in the classroom we could leave in the box. On our way the children took turns being the leader. We had to manage our way around some huge puddles. Sometimes the puddles won. N spotted the poison ivy on the trees and warned the others. At the island we noticed how deep the lake had become. The log we sat on last time was now in the water. The island was tiny. By the time we reached our camp everyone was feeling tired and gloomy. Some of our things were getting soaked through. We headed back a little early. Some of us had to change our clothes. Then a soothing bowl of soup with a sandwich to end the morning. A rest helped too. A freshed to do some art. Osage orangeT found a strange looking object on the other side of the fence. Susanne look at this. What is it? S-What do you think it is? T managed to pull it under the fence. Now the exploring began. T took the lead with the others watching and offering suggestions. T used a toy knife to try to cut it open. A yellow juice seeped out. The group decided to add the liquid to the sand and mix it together. The children checked the smell and the amount of liquid. So much exploring was happening. Eventually the name of the plant was reveiled... osage orange (aka horse apple). The next day we found the tree where the fruit is from. Each child picked one to carry with them on our hike. We brought the oranges into the classroom to look pretty and purfume the room. Written by S Robitaille.
