Since the children have been learning and pretending to be pirates Bev had a great idea to hide tresure in the forest. With maps and buckets in hand the children went to find the treasure. Everyone recieved bubbles for blowing, a coosh dinosaur and a diamond.

Today is Orange Shirt Day. We have been talking about the history of the land and Residential School. When we do our Land Acknowledgement we tell it as a story. This way we can ask questions and learn about our forest. We add in important information like who lived here, when the Settlers came, Residential School and eventually the missing Indigenous people. We read a variety of Indigenous childrens story books. This is our Land Acknowledgement: Long ago the First Nations people lived here on Turtle Island also called North America. The Indigenous people took care of the land. They travelled often so they would not damage the land. They only hunted what was needed and they shared with their family. One day a boat came with Settlers on it. The Settlers did not know how to live in this new place. The First Nations people helped the Setters and showed them what foods to grow and harvest. They lived and worked without any trouble. Then one day some Settlers were grumpy and decided the Indigenous people were doing everything wrong and didn't want them using their own language. They were so grumpy they decided to take the Indigenous children away and put them in a sleep over school called Residential school. There the children were not allowed to speak their language and sometimes change their name. The children had to sleep there for lots of days before they could go home. Now the Settlers realize that Residential school was a bad idea. The closed all the schools and let the children go home. Now our job is to take care of the forest and the land around us for others to share. One day when you are a Mommy or Daddy you will be able to share the forest with your children. The children are looking for creature to explore and hold. They are very brave to touch so many critters. youtube.com/shorts/5fJ2oe9RoZg?feature=share Written by S Robitaille
We returned to camp. Today we used the same dishes to start. Susanne brought 2 bug jars for catching critters. T did not disappoint, he had a salamander in there. The toad did not cooperate. Q had a slug in his.
ND wanted to try the peelers. He found a stick and removed all of the bark. ND worked really hard and long to make it just right. N and J decided to try too. They worked hard and were very careful of others. Later Q wanted to paint. N, T, J and ND joined in. Before we knew it it was time to go. The wagon was carrying all the wet paint when some children either leaned on the wagon or held on to closely, they got paint on their clothes. Good thing everything is washable. The first thing T said to me was "I'm going to catch a frog". He had a measuring cup in hand and went on a search. T was joined by Q and begun to dig. They may not have found a frog but did catch a salamander. That started everyone looking to catch critters. H was every interested in the ant hill found under a log. Brittany found a toad, it was to big for T's container. N found a slug. ND and B enjoyed the fort. J told stories of his trips to Duffin island to feed the ducks and geese with his grandparents. This was a great first day. Written by S Robitaille.
There is a book called The Dot. It is about being creative and making art. Today we used cotton swabs and paint to make a "dot" picture. The urge to make lines is great and can be overwelming. We fought the urge.
After some went to play and others wanted to continue making art. Susanne brought out some fun shaped hole punchs. We could punch out shapes from different colours of paper then glue them. It took great strength to use the whole punch. (Great fine motor builder). Written by S Robitaille This week we had a lot of fun getting to know each other. We found that H knows a lot about opossums, F loves to talk about dinosaurs and ND likes to build with B. Q enjoys lego, T likes them too. And N likes using scissors to cut a large paper into a tiny one. There has been some talk about treasure maps and pirates around the lunch table. We can explore this idea a little more next week. Aarrrh we ready?! Written by S Robitaille
I am excited to begin this new year. We are making friends and learning about our room. We have drawn self portraits and practised writing our names. Next week we begin Jolly Phonics and some math activities.
We will be going to camp on Thursdays and Fridays starting September 15th. If the weather is warm we will need a long sleeve t-shirt and splash pants to protect from ticks. If its chilly a jacket and splash pants will be great. Written by S Robitaille |
